I have been actively investing over the past 20+ years directly as an individual angel investor, two accelerators I've managed (CrossCoin Ventures and Menlo Incubator), a venture capital firm (Outlook Ventures) and as a member of Sand Hill Angels. I've also been teaching entrepreneurship at U.C. Berkeley and San Jose State University for over 20 years (my former students have started a number of interesting companies including Eventbrite, Xoom, 500 Startups, Marimba, LinuxCare and have been investors at venture capital firms including Mohr Davidow Ventures, Kapor Capital, and Founders Fund) Throughout this time, I've also been part of the management team of over 25 startups (including iControl Networks, Fliqz, Valchemy, Greystripe, Orbital Data, Callisto Media, GolfWeb, Qvivr, Revel Systems) as CFO and many others as advisor and/or board member (including WaterSmart Software, Anonymizer). I'm also an advisor or limited partner in a number of venture and debt funds (including Angel Investors LP, New Atlantic Ventures, Right Side Capital, Montage Capital, 500 Startups, Bullpen Capital, Liquid 2 Ventures). Given the above, I have a very strong network to source interesting investment opportunities. I believe in working hard with founders of the teams I invest in and like to share investment opportunities with others who do and believe the same. Because of this, I have sat on the sidelines and not created a syndicate to date as I didn't want to take a carry from other angels. That is why I am offering a "no-carry" syndicate (AngelList still gets 5% for their value-add). This way all of our interests are aligned. If the entrepreneur wins, I win, and you win!
I plan on syndicating all deals where I am making a significant investment of time and money assuming I can get an allocation. I've been making 4-6 investments/year and plan on continuing that pace over the coming years.
