Investing Philosophy
Investing in paradigm shifts powered by tech. I have been angel investing over the past 6+ years and have backed companies from seed to growth. The vast majority of my initial investments are in the Seed/Series A round.
I have been investing in crypto since 2013 and co-invested in competitive early-stage deals including Basis, Filecoin, Hashgraph, Kadena, Chia, Dfinity, Nervos, Multicoin Capital and Thunder. Other investments in healthcare and tech include: Airtable, Elysium Health, Everlywell, Indigo, Boom Supersonic, Qwil, and SmithRx. For a full list visit Roca Capital.
The vision is to invest in category leaders of tomorrow. The syndicate will be a combination of (1) new deals, and (2) future rounds of existing portfolio companies. The fund will be investing primarily in tech (incl. fintech, SaaS, and crypto) and healthcare.
Sectors of Focus
Tech
- Certain industries have resisted or been slow to adopt technology and leave us wondering: there ought to be a better way (e.g., financial services, healthcare, insurance, and real estate).
- We look for industries that have systemic friction and where technology can unlock value and have a meaningful impact on society.
Crypto
- For the first time, we have a system that guarantees trust and security without intermediaries.
- Cryptonetworks represent a new, more efficient model of co-operatives and enables new forms of coordination and governance.
- Crypto now has more open source developers than Linux, which will lead to explosive innovation (source).
- Bitcoin has weathered over a decade of attacks and is paving the way to a decentralized and peer-to-peer future.
Healthcare
- We're living longer but not necessarily healthier.
- A disproportionate share of spend is happening in the "last mile" of life.
- A shift from reactive to preventive, outcomes-based care is necessary.
- Smartphones are medical devices.
- The microbiome holds the keys to many unsolved medical mysteries.
Expect to syndicate all dealflow as long as it is (1) approved by the company/founders, and (2) secure a sufficiently large allocation in the round ($50k+) to reach critical mass.
