I've invested in~30 startups to date. You can see them here: https://kunle.app/investing.html.
I invest in 4 hypotheses:
Financial Services infrastructure and vertical neobanks
I invest in fintech in a few ways; first, I invest in routing layers; infrastructure for fintechs that makes it simple to do a specific, non critical but necessary task for which there are a several, hard to distinguish vendors. Out of this thesis I've invested in Alloy (routing layer for identity verification), Payitoff (routing layer for student loans) and Pinwheel (routing layer for payroll).
Second, permissionless developer tools for financial services; APIs that democratize the process of creating financial services for consumers and businesses, including issuing accounts and cards, simplifying moneymovement, and expanding access. Out of this thesis I've invested in Privacy.com.
Finally, I invest in vertical neobanks; modern, technology enabled banks focused on a vertical slice of the market. Out of this thesis I've invested in Mercury.com and one in stealth.
Regulated Industries
I believe a lot of the generational scale change that technology can bring is in industries that have seen the least technology penetration; finance, healthcare, construction, real estate, natural resources, logistics, and aerospace. So far (non-exhaustive list):
- Real Estate: Reddoor (consumer mortgages), Awning (commercial real estate marketplace)
- Construction: Offsight
- Finance: Privacy (issuing platform for developers), Mercury (bank for startups), Resolve (installments for SMBs), Hatch (operating system for busiensses), Alloy (API for identity verification)
- Healthcare: Biobot, Persephone Biome, Better
YC Alumni
I invest heavily in YC Alumni starting companies after YC. I've found there to be interesting and durable patterns to the way they go about their company after YC, and no one focuses on this. Out of this thesis I've invested in: Matician, RedDoor, Awning, Hatch, Resolve, and a few others in stealth.
Strong Operators in my network
I've been lucky to work with some extremely strong operators, and when I get the chance, I invest in them. This includes Faire, Sure, Transform, Leadout, Tiny, and Artemys.
I'll source deals out of the theses listed above. Where possible, I'll syndicate deals assuming the founder is up for it.
