(I made dozens of investments before focusing on climate tech in October 2019, many of which are listed below.)
We're at the beginning of a new wave of climate tech startups that are building solutions to our climate crisis. Cleantech 1.0 gave us the rise of Tesla and Sunrun. Now the cost of solar is cheaper than fossil fuels, batteries are 85% cheaper than 10 years ago, AI enables software that learns, and automation reduces redundant tasks. These shifts are driving innovation in climate tech across energy, transportation, agriculture, health, food, materials, real estate, construction, retail, insurance, and other industries.
Traditional VCs have made some investments in this area (e.g. Beyond alternative meat, Plenty vertical farming), but many are still learning about the disruptive force of these shifts on existing industries. Forward-thinking investors like Sequoia, Y Combinator and Union Square Ventures are making investments in climate tech now.
My mission is to provide early-stage climate tech startups with access to more capital and talent. I invest in climate tech startups in the seed stage when they are forming their startups and starting to grow. I help founders develop their narratives for fundraising, sales and marketing, and I help them get follow-on funding and grow with help from my network. I open my network of startup founders, operators and investors to the climate tech startups I work with. I grew up in Menlo Park, went to Menlo School and Stanford, worked at Intuit, Meraki and at VC firms Floodgate, Rothenberg Ventures, Haystack and AngelList.
My dealflow comes from my growing network of climate tech founders and investors. I syndicate $100k-$250k allocations. I typically invest alongside an institutional seed fund.
