“We have 12 years to limit climate change catastrophe” - United Nations IPCC, 2018
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious planet?
If not me, Who?
If not now, When?
We as ClimateTech operators have worked for most of our careers on causes related to the climate. As we pass +1C, climate disasters are accelerating, just as we feared. These days we're asking: are we doing enough?
Will we look down at our grandchildren and think: "I wish I had done more, sooner!"
We know the cause of ClimateTech needs more early stage capital, from experienced operators who understand the space and can support with their capital and, if called upon, with their expertise.
This syndicate will invest primarily in software focused ClimateTech companies from pre-seed to Series A.
We'll invest in capable founders, with at least a working beta, happy early customers, and strong product market fit.
This syndicate is a continuation of the personal investing I started in 2014 when I took my profits from the sale of Axio Power to then publicly traded SunEdison and began deploying them into cleantech SaaS businesses. My first two checks went into Folsom Labs, developers of Helioscope solar PV design software which quickly grew to be the dominant player in commercial system design software as well as UtilityAPI, building the "Twilio for energy data" or the pipe that delivers energy data securely between customers, utilities, and third party DER developers. Both companies were exiting Beta when I invested. They are both profitable and growing rapidly now. In 2021, Folsom Labs was acquired by Aurora Solar.
My third investment was in myself, when I founded Solar Merchant, a commercial solar projects marketplace which received three successive grants from the U.S. Department of Energy's Sunshot Catalyst program before we merged the company with Electrum (formerly Pick My Solar Corp) to accelerate our solution to utility partners across the country like SoCal Edison, ConEdison, American Electric Power, as well as acquired the web domain Solar.com.
If you're tired of letting your investments sit idle in ETFs and broad mutual funds, and ready to start making a broader impact on the planet, join our rowdy band of Climate Avengers.
I will share most of my deals with this syndicate, I will be making some investments out of the Climate Avengers Rolling Fund which may not have additional allocation available for the syndicate. Rolling Fund LPs will get first access to additional allocations available for syndication. I do not lead rounds but prefer to co-invest with top early stage investors to be named at the time of each investment.
