Note from Matt Caspari
Hi, I’m Matt Caspari.
I’m a 2x founder/CEO with scar tissue from building venture-backed companies.
My syndicate invests in strong founder/CEOs, typically at the seed stage ($1m+ rounds, institutional funds participating, 18+ months of runway). These entrepreneurs are passionate about their missions and are magnets for resources, which is critical to success. I'm industry agnostic, I look for opportunities large enough to deliver a grand slam and I'm very founder / CEO focused in my evaluation of companies.
I'm a Managing Partner at Alumni Ventures, where I lead the Deep Tech Fund and Strawberry Creek Ventures, a UC-Berkeley-centric fund. Prior to Alumni Ventures, I gained operational experience as a two-time venture-backed founder/CEO and as a leader of the innovation team at Nike. I was the founding CEO of Aurora Biofuels, a deep tech venture that grew to 100+ employees, secured over $100 million in funding and was acquired by Reliance Industries. At Nike, I spearheaded global initiatives to expedite 'Move to Zero', the company's commitment to achieving zero carbon and zero waste.
In earlier roles, I was a strategic management consultant at Cambridge Pharma Consultancy, later acquired by IMS Health, and gained experience on the M&A team at Bloomberg. I hold a BS in Biochemistry from Georgetown University and an MBA with a Certificate in Entrepreneurship from UC Berkeley.
These are high-risk, high-reward opportunities, the portfolio over the long-term will likely follow a power law distribution.
- You can opt out of any deal.
- Do not expect updates, although I will share them when possible.
- Do not participate unless you are prepared to lose all of your investment without complaint.
- Investments should only be made as part of a large and diversified portfolio.
Deep founder empathy coupled with operating experience gives me credibility with entrepreneurs and leads to deal flow.
I will syndicate deals when I'm able to secure a large enough allocation.
